What is the best thing that has ever happened to me?
Here we go again with yet another question requiring deep thought, and a continuation of self discovery and evaluation.
I guess I could go with the easy answers…being born, getting married, the birth of my children, the birth of my grandchildren. All of these outstanding events go without saying, but I am now delving into things that have made me who I am, things that radically changed my life.
After considerable thought, I have determined that the best thing that ever happened to me was starting and owning my own business.
For me it was a radical step. It was taking a giant leap of faith. It was life changing and “me” changing. It was 25 years of growth, adaptation, and change. It opened doors that I never would have dared open, it created confidence, and a belief in myself that I had never had. It spawned the courage to follow my instincts. It produced friendships and alignment, it generated travel, it brought success as well as failure. It proved that hard work can pay off. It taught me about loyalty. It magnified my understanding that other people believe in me. It caused me to become more fearless and self reliant.
As I look back on my life and investigate all the many things that I have encountered and enjoyed, the highs and the lows, I realize that what changes me the most and has the most impact is the work and the effort, the goals and the accomplishments.
I have been blessed with many bests in my life and I am so very thankful. I strive now to find the best in each and every day, to concentrate on the good things in my life and make the positives my focus.
Will there be more”best things” in my future now that I am “retired”? Of course. “Best” things will come to me because I now have a perpetual goal to be the best that I can be and to assist those that I touch to be the best they can be. It is by genuinely living that we derive the best that life has to offer.
